My ideal relationship timeline. As you can see, friendship should take up the majority of the time spent that a person and I are together with a gradual slope towards specified exclusivity.
In this example, the exclusivity would be slowly realized and accepted by both parties, rendering an awkward DTR completely unnecessary.
